How we can get knocked out of the Wafer Cup

Published by: Dublin Yid on Friday 5th December 2008 05:12pm

We don’t play again until Monday night at Upton Park so I got out my slide rule to see how our Wafer Cup Group D could turn out.

On the night of December 18, the following two matches will be played at the same time…

NEC v Udinese
Tottenham v Spartak Moscow

The way things stand in our group, it is still possible for us to finish first and get a good seeding in the Last 32.

The ONLY way that can happen is if we win and Udinese lose. Doesn’t matter about goal difference in this case. If we win AND they lose, we finish first.

If we draw with Spartak, we at least clinch second spot, though that has its downside in that we must then face one of the “parachute” teams from the Champions League.

Now…to the interesting part. Well, some may find it interesting, others may get a splitting headache!!!

There are circumstances by which we can finish fourth in the group and thus be eliminated from the competition.

They involve both us losing AND NEC beating the Italians, but only in certain ways.

  • First of all, if Spartak beat us by just the one goal, then they can’t overtake us and we’re through no matter what happens in the other match.
  • If we lose by 2 goals, NEC must win by at least 2 to eliminate us.
  • If we lose by 3 goals, a one-goal win for NEC is enough to eliminate us but ONLY if they score at least one more goal on the night than we do (for example if we lose 1-4, their one-goal win must be 2-1 or better). Obviously, in this case, an NEC win by 2 goals or more will also eliminate us.
  • If we lose by 4 goals or more, any win for NEC is enough to eliminate us.

So as you can see, although it is possible for us to get knocked out, it is highly unlikely, so here’s hoping Spurs fans WON'T have to revert back to this post close to full time on the night!!!

LETS GET IT ALL STRAIGHT

RUMOUR:WERE A SMALL CLUB.TRUTH:weve got the 5th biggest behind man.utd,Liverpool,ar5ena1 an Chelsea. The last survey in 98 showed us as 4th which shows Chelskis improving fan-base is just glory hunters. We manage to fill to capacity week in week out even when were doing shit(last 20 years.)Theres 80,000 club members and 25,000 waiting for season tickets....which shows what we know...we need a new stadium.

RUMOUR:WERE A JEWISH CLUB.TRUTH:This one started by the Chelsea firm because of the fact were in a highly multicultaural area and in our firm(something Im not into but know about)theres a mix of black white jews christians and atheists which shows our diversity and that were not a racist set up---something Im proud of.Not only that but the Arsenal area has a higher jewish population and David Deins a jew so is Roman Abramovich theres no more no less with us compared to any other club.

RUMOUR:WERE A SHIT TEAM.TRUTH:History doesnt lie. Before the game was about money, corporate sponsorships tv rights etc,Spurs set the standards. The team was all British,in an era were you had to scrap for titles and not buy-we were the first team to do the double,to win the european cup,non league club to win the fa cup,and more firsts.True times have changed-BUT ITS TRADITION AND HISTORY THAT MAKES A CLUB AND WHAT IT STANDS FOR!Another thing these GOONIES may hark on about our lack of titles but you must remember that its the OPINIONS OF EXPERTS THAT COUNT.VENABLES_"THAT TEAM WAS THE BEST I EVER SAW,EVEN BETTER THAN THE UNBEATABLE ARSENAL 2004-2005?Alex Ferguson has said similar,so has Gary Lineker and Bobby Robson-PEOPLE WHO KNOW,NOT SOME DIMLOW DIVVY GOONER MUG!

MY OUTLOOK ON RECENT EVENTS:I didnt like the sale of Keane but I think his best was at Spurs so 20 million was a good price. As for Berbatov Ferguson shouldnt of got away with hounding him but we made profit out of him and a loan striker for the season-good buisness.However--Harry is a good boss,English pedigree a wheeler dealer and someone the players can look over to for guidance.Levys chose an awkward time for the stadium development, but its safe to say its long overdue...........I dont know a lot about his finances but Im sure the board have worked it all out around the recession etc.The stadium will only be part built from naming rights money as well as his own kitty.Winning cups would see us earning prize money but we have to be realistic with what we can acheive.Saying that at the start of the season....I WAS THE MOST EXCITED AS IVE EVER BEEN AS  A SPURS FAN BEFORE BERBA AND KEANES EXIT.

Weve been unlucky with bad decisions(thats football yes,but what wouldve happened if the referee counted the 50 yarder that went in against Man u?!)We wouldve been in Europe. Then last game of the season all the players had food poisoning but still put up a good fight(coys!)The board, split decisions loyalties structure has all played its part but Theyre starting to get it right. We'll be back from our sleep and to all our mockers-------get some crayons and paper and an education!..................YID ARMY!!!.........................COME ON YOU SPURS!!.......

2005
We were in the running for European qualification in 2004-05 via the Premier League until defeat at Middlesbrough in the penultimate game of the season. We ended up ninth.

2006
A memorable year! With the likes of Aaron Lennon and Michael Dawson coming to the fore, we held on to fourth place for most of the 2005-06 season until defeat at West Ham on the final day. Going into the 2007-08 season, new arrivals included Gareth Bale and Darren Bent but following a poor start, Martin Jol was asked to stand down alongside coach Chris Hughton. Highly-rated Juande Ramos was appointed Head Coach with coaching assistants Marcos Alvarez and former Spur Gus Poyet.

The year marked our 125 anniversary.

2008
A magnificent start to the year saw us first beat Arsenal 5-1 and then topple Chelsea 2-1 to lift the League Cup at Wembley Stadium. We finished the league campaign in 11th place.

Darren Bent plays tonight

Published by: spursmurf on Wednesday 19th November 2008 04:11am

darren_bent_england_240.jpgDarren Bent will be looking to take his chance with both hands should he get a taste of the action for England against Germany tonight.

It will be the striker's first game for his country since November last year after being recalled to the squad for this friendly.

Darren's form for Spurs, which has seen him hit eight goals in eight appearances, has earned him his place, and he hopes to make it a regular occurrence by impressing Fabio Capello in Berlin.

And ‘Benty' feels he is brimming with confidence having played a key role in our resurgence under Harry Redknapp.

"Playing up front on my own for Tottenham this season has made me a better player and a stronger person" said Darren.

"Now I'm here I want to get on the pitch and obviously you always want to play for your country. Hopefully I'll get the nod for the game.

"Obviously, when you are not a regular, you always feel you have got something to prove. So if I can get the chance on Wednesday to show what I'm about, I will.

"To be involved in a game like England against Germany can only be special and I hope to play."

Fraizer Campbell's scores 4 under-21s

Published by: spursmurf on Wednesday 19th November 2008 05:11am

fraizer_u21sczech420.jpgFraizer Campbell's fine form continued with the opening goal as England Under-21s beat the Czech Republic 2-0 in a friendly on Tuesday night.

The striker capitalised on defensive hesitancy to neatly lift the ball over goalkeeper Jakub Divis and into the far corner to hand Stuart Pearce's side the ideal start at Sheffield United's Bramall Lane.

Fraizer was one of three Spurs in the starting XI alongside Jamie O'Hara and Aaron Lennon. Meanwhile Tomas Pekhart, currently on loan at Southampton, played the first half for the Czech Republic.

Fraizer was soon back in the action, setting up a golden chance for James Vaughan, who fired over.

Aston Villa's Craig Gardner drilled home a free-kick to make it 2-0 after 55 minutes and Fraizer and Jamie almost combined for a third when Fraizer was brought down for a penalty - unfortuntely, Divis saved Jamie's spot kick.

Fraizer was substituted after 69 minutes, Jamie after 80 and Aaron played the full 90 - Fraizer was later named man of the match.

Spurs Ladies

Published by: spursmurf on Wednesday 19th November 2008 05:11am

kirsten_thompson.jpgSpurs Ladies earned a 1-1 draw from their visit to Northampton Town in the first of three consecutive meetings with the Midlands side.

Goalkeeper Ricole Vyse was in a commanding form as the home side applied the early pressure.

A loose ball on the edge of the box was fired home by a Northampton forward to give Town a 1-0 lead, but Spurs felt aggrieved not to have a first half penalty when Alex Small was bundled over in the box.

The second half brought improvement and it wasn't long before Spurs were level when a goalmouth scramble resulted in the Northampton keeper spilling a low cross which fell to the feet of Kirsten Thomson (pictured), who accordingly put the ball hard and low into the right hand corner of the net to equalise.

The rest of the match was tense, although Spurs did come close when substitute Jessie Richards side-stepped the goalkeeper only to be intercepted by a Northampton defender who had tracked her run to deny her a winning goal.

In other results, the Under-11 side defeated Bedmond Ajax 2-0, while the Under-10 Whites ran out 1-0 winners over Enfield Rangers.

But perhaps the most exciting game of the weekend came at Under-14 level, where Laura Newby scored a dramatic late equaliser for Spurs at Harvesters to keep the sides locked together at the top of their league table.

Kick Racism out of Football Poetry Competition

Published by: spursmurf on Wednesday 19th November 2008 05:11am

john_bostock_poetry_405.jpgJohn Bostock was at White Hart Lane stadium on Tuesday rewarding the winners of this year's Kick Racism out of Football Poetry Competition.

The competition was organised by the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, the Enfield Local Football Partnership, Enfield Town FC and Enfield Town Ladies FC, with support from the Enfield Race Equality Council, the London Borough of Enfield, Middlesex County FA and Enfield and Haringey Libraries, and was made open to primary and secondary school children throughout the two boroughs.

Participants were challenged to write poetry on the subject of Walter Tull, the first black outfield professional footballer who played for Tottenham Hotspur between 1909 and 1911.

The young poets were invited to library workshops in Enfield and Haringey in order to do their research on Tull, who died serving as the first black officer in the British Army during World War One.

John, who on Thursday November 6 became our youngest ever player to play a competitive match at the age of 16 years, 295 days, handed out prizes to this year's winners.

He said: "The life of Walter Tull and the challenges he faced should act as an inspiration to us all, so it's extremely encouraging that the Club is encouraging children to learn more on the subject.

"And what better way than for them to write poetry and therefore express themselves creatively. I was happy to meet these budding poets!"

John was joined in the prize-giving by players from Enfield Town and Enfield Town Ladies Football Club.

As part of the day's celebrations, all participants got to take a tour of White Hart Lane stadium and learn a little more about the history of the Club.
